Neeraj Chopra’s Career Almost Ended by Early Basketball Mishap—How Did He Bounce Back?

Bhubaneswar : Neeraj Chopra, India’s celebrated Olympic and World Champion javelin thrower, revealed a startling episode from his early athletic journey that nearly ended his career before it truly began. The injury did not happen during javelin practice or competition but rather while he was playing around on a basketball court. Holding onto the basketball ring while jumping, Neeraj fell suddenly and fractured the wrist on his throwing hand—the same hand crucial for his javelin throws. The injury was severe enough to require prolonged plastering, and doctors warned him that the complicated fracture might prevent him from ever throwing again.

This wrist injury was a major setback for the young athlete. Neeraj recalls feeling devastated at the time, believing his dreams of a javelin career might be over. However, his unwavering passion to represent India kept his resolve alive. As he began to recover, his mindset grew stronger, fueling his determination to get back to throwing. This early challenge helped shape the resilience and mental toughness that would later define his illustrious career.

Despite this rocky start, Neeraj went on to achieve remarkable success, including breaking the U20 javelin world record in 2016, winning the historic Olympic gold medal in Tokyo 2020, securing a World Championship silver in 2022, and finally clinching the world title in 2023. His journey from a fractured wrist to global podiums underscores his extraordinary comeback and commitment.

More recently, Neeraj faced another critical injury before the 2024 Diamond League final—a fracture of the fourth metacarpal in his non-throwing left hand sustained during practice. Remarkably, he competed in the final with this fresh injury, finishing a close second, just 0.01 meters behind the winner. He confirmed that despite the pain, he completed the season with the help of his team and plans to return fully fit and stronger in the next season.

Additionally, Neeraj has been managing a persistent groin injury that has impacted his technique and performance during the 2024 season. He has postponed surgery to focus on rehabilitation and is also in the process of finding a new coach who can help him reach the next level in his career.

Neeraj Chopra’s story is a powerful testament to overcoming adversity. His early wrist injury stands as a critical turning point—transforming potential defeat into a driving force behind one of India’s greatest athletic careers. His message to aspiring athletes is clear: setbacks are not the end but can be the foundation for greatness with the right mindset.
