Shubman Gill Eyes 19-Year-Old Asian Batting Record in England Ahead of Crucial Old Trafford Test

Manchester, UK – India captain Shubman Gill is on the cusp of etching his name into the record books as the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England gets underway at Old Trafford on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Gill needs just 25 more runs to surpass a 19-year-old record for the most runs scored by an Asian batter in a Test series in England.

Currently, Gill has amassed a staggering 607 runs in just three matches, at an exceptional average of 101.16. His prolific form includes a monumental 430 runs alone in the second Test in Birmingham, where he scored a career-best 269 in the first innings, propelling India to a resounding 336-run victory.

The record for the most runs by an Asian batter in a Test series in England is currently held by former Pakistan batting maestro Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 631 runs in four matches at an average of 90.14 during Pakistan’s 2006 tour. With Gill just 25 runs shy, a single substantial innings in Manchester could see him claim this significant milestone.

Most Runs in a Test Series in England (Asian Batters):

  1. Mohammad Yousuf (Pakistan) – 631 runs from 4 matches (2006)
  2. Shubman Gill (India) – 607 runs from 3 matches (2025) – Ongoing
  3. Rahul Dravid (India) – 602 runs from 4 matches (2002)
  4. Virat Kohli (India) – 593 runs from 5 matches (2018)
  5. Sunil Gavaskar (India) – 542 runs from 4 matches (1979)

India’s Quest to Conquer Old Trafford

Despite Gill’s individual brilliance, India finds themselves trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, having suffered a narrow 22-run defeat in the third Test at Lord’s. The loss drew some criticism for Gill’s captaincy, especially after a quiet outing with the bat in the Lord’s Test.

The upcoming Test at Old Trafford presents another significant challenge for Team India. Historically, India has never secured a Test victory at this venue across nine previous attempts, having drawn five and lost four, with their last appearance in 2014 resulting in a comprehensive defeat. Breaking this long-standing ‘fortress’ will be crucial for India to keep their hopes alive in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. The team will be aiming to level the series and set up a decider in the final Test.
