German Track Cycling Championships Halted After Crash Injures Spectators

Dudenhofen, Germany- The final day of the German Track Cycling Championships in Dudenhofen, western Germany, was canceled following a severe incident where two cyclists crashed into the crowd, injuring several spectators.

Details of the Incident and Injuries

The accident occurred during the final bend of the men’s keirin semi-finals. The two riders, traveling at approximately 35mph, lost control and careered over the barriers into the spectator area.

Seven spectators sustained injuries, with some being serious. Two of the injured required airlifting to the hospital. Fortunately, both cyclists involved in the crash only suffered minor injuries.

Emergency services, including two helicopters, six ambulances, and an emergency doctor, were dispatched to the scene to provide immediate assistance.

Officials Express Concern and Support

Oliver Streich, German Cycling’s marketing and communications officer, stated, “The health of athletes and spectators always comes first. Cancelling the event was therefore unavoidable. Best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to all those injured.”

Jens Hartwig,0Chairman of the Dudenhofen Cycling Club, expressed his shock: “I’m shocked by the accident. We’ve had a cycling festival here in Dudenhofen for five days. Of course, no-one wanted the event to end like this. I wish everyone involved a speedy and full recovery.”
