The Kapil Pokhariya Asian Games 2026 campaign has delivered a major breakthrough as the Indian boxer secured a medal in the men’s 90kg category at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Kapil defeated South Korea’s Kim Gichae by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the quarterfinal at Nishio Gymnasium on September 28, booking his place in the semifinals.
Kapil used his height and reach effectively throughout the contest. He controlled the opening round with sharp attacking punches and repeatedly found the target with his left hooks to take the round on all five judges’ cards.

The Indian continued to dictate the fight in the second round, maintaining distance while putting Kim under sustained pressure. A series of clean punches forced a standing count against the South Korean, although Kim was able to continue.
Kapil again secured the round and eventually completed a 5-0 unanimous victory. Kim attempted to increase the pressure in the third round, but Kapil remained composed, selected his punches carefully and protected his advantage until the final bell.
The victory confirmed Kapil as an Asian Games medallist and sent him into the semifinal, where he will now fight for a place in the gold-medal bout.
Kapil Pokhariya Asian Games 2026 Journey From Uttarakhand
For Kapil, the medal carries particular significance. The boxer comes from Chakarpur village in Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, and began boxing around 2014 while he was in Class 10. His first coach, Puran Boro, recognised his potential early and helped develop him through basic training facilities.
Kapil won his first national-level youth medal in 2017 before joining the Sports Authority of India centre in Kashipur. He won a senior national medal in 2019 and joined the Indian Army in 2020. He later moved into the 90kg category after initially competing around the 80kg and 85kg divisions.
Kapil Pokhariya Asian Games 2026 Medal After Commonwealth Setback
The Asian Games medal also comes after a difficult Commonwealth Games experience. Kapil had competed at Glasgow 2026 but exited in the quarterfinals, a defeat that affected his confidence and forced him and his coaching team back to the drawing board.
Army Sports Institute head coach Harikishan Belwal said the team worked on double attacks, movement and other technical details after the setback. He also praised Kapil’s ability to adapt his strategy according to his opponent.
That preparation was visible against Kim. Belwal had specifically warned Kapil about the counter-attacking ability of Korean and Japanese boxers, and the Indian responded by maintaining distance and preventing Kim from landing his strongest punches.
Kapil Pokhariya Asian Games 2026 Adds to India’s Boxing Medals
Kapil’s semifinal qualification also strengthened India’s boxing campaign in Aichi-Nagoya. He became the sixth Indian boxer assured of a medal at these Games, joining Ankush Panghal, Parveen Hooda, Narender Berwal, Lovlina Borgohain and Priya Ghanghas.
- For Kapil, however, the job is not finished. The quarterfinal victory guarantees a podium finish, but his next objective will be a place in the 90kg gold-medal bout.
