Neeraj Chopra Dominates Ostrava Golden Spike with Third Season Victory

Neeraj Chopra, the reigning world champion and two-time Olympic medalist, secured his third victory of the season at the 64th Ostrava Golden Spike on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Competing in the World Athletics Continental Tour (Gold Level) event, the 27-year-old Indian triumphed in the men’s javelin throw with a best effort of 85.29m, achieved in his third round.

Key Throws and Competitors

Chopra’s performance began with a foul, followed by a throw of 83.45m before he unleashed his winning mark. His subsequent throws were 82.17m, 81.01m, and another foul. South Africa’s Douw Smit claimed second place with 84.12m, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters took third with 83.63m.

Season Highlights Leading to Ostrava

This victory adds to an impressive season for Chopra. He kicked off his year with a win at an invitational meet in Potchefstroom, South Africa, throwing 84.52m. A significant moment came at his Diamond League opener in Doha, where he surpassed the 90m mark for the first time with a throw of 90.23m, although he finished second to Germany’s Julian Weber (91.06m). Chopra again placed second to Weber at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Chorzow, Poland (84.14m to Weber’s 86.12m), before finally beating Weber at the Paris Diamond League on Friday, June 20, 2025, with an opening throw of 88.16m.

Looking Ahead: The Inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic

Chopra’s next major appearance will be at the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic on July 5, 2025, at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Billed as India’s first international javelin competition, this historic event is a collaboration between Neeraj Chopra, JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), and World Athletics (WA), marking it as the highest-tier international athletics meet ever hosted in India.
