India vs England, 1st Test Day 4: KL Rahul Steadies Ship as India Builds Crucial Lead at Headingley

India vs England, 1st Test Day 4: KL Rahul Steadies Ship as India Builds Crucial Lead at Headingley

Leeds, June 23: On a day that began with promise for England, India clawed their way back into control through a gritty and mature batting display led by KL Rahul, ending the first session of Day 4 with a commanding lead of 159 runs and seven wickets still in hand.

Gill Falls Early, Carse Strikes

The day’s first flashpoint came early when India lost their skipper Shubman Gill for just 8. Brydon Carse, delivering a sharp in-swinger, shattered Gill’s stumps with a beauty that left the captain stunned and England elated. At that point, India’s second innings looked shaky with a slim lead.

Rahul’s Classy Resistance

Amidst England’s probing attack under overcast skies, KL Rahul once again demonstrated why he remains India’s most reliable Test batter overseas. Patient against the seamers and punishing when the opportunity arose, Rahul navigated the tricky first hour with finesse. By lunch, he stood unbeaten on 72, having absorbed pressure and capitalized on occasional lapses in England’s bowling.

Notably, Rahul survived a sharp chance when Harry Brook spilled a catch at gully. That moment seemed to deflate the hosts’ momentum, allowing India to slowly wrest control back.

Pant Adds Edge, Keeps England Guessing

At the other end, Rishabh Pant added a streak of unpredictability. Though he played and missed several times, the left-hander managed to survive the testing spells and contributed an aggressive 31* by lunch. His counter-attacking intent forced the English bowlers to adjust their lengths and lines, often creating scoring opportunities for India.

England’s Missed Opportunities

While Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes bowled probing spells, England failed to maintain consistency. Moreover, their fielding woes from the previous day continued to haunt them — Brook’s drop of Rahul added to a growing list of missed chances that included six dropped catches in the first innings alone.

Jasprit Bumrah had earlier dragged India back into the match with a fiery five-wicket haul, but without adequate support from the rest of the bowling unit and fielders, the advantage had remained marginal. Now, with Rahul solidifying India’s position, those missed moments loom larger.

The Road Ahead

India, with a 159-run lead and seven wickets in hand, are well-placed to set England a challenging fourth-innings target. The pitch at Headingley is beginning to show signs of uneven bounce, and batting on the final day could be tricky. Much will depend on how Rahul continues and whether Pant or the lower order can accelerate and add to the cushion.

For England, a quick burst post-lunch is essential. Early wickets could turn the tide again, but they’ll need sharper fielding and disciplined lines to make that happen.

Final Thoughts

In what has been a see-sawing Test, Day 4 has so far belonged to India thanks to a composed KL Rahul and a determined team effort. The match remains tantalizingly poised, but India have quietly edged ahead — and with conditions expected to favor bowlers later, the pressure is squarely on the home side.

Key Stats at Lunch, Day 4:

India 2nd innings: 153/3

KL Rahul: 72* (not out)

Rishabh Pant: 31* (not out)

Lead: 159 runs

England Bowling: Brydon Carse 1/28, Ben Stokes 1/27

All eyes now turn to the post-lunch session

as India looks to bat England out of the contest.
