Zimbabwe’s possible entry into the 2027-30 World Test Championship cycle will not change Sikandar Raza’s retirement plans, with the all-rounder determined to end his international career after next year’s ODI World Cup.

The 40-year-old, who captains Zimbabwe in ODIs and T20Is, is looking forward to playing a home World Cup as Zimbabwe co-hosts the 2027 tournament alongside South Africa and Namibia.

Raza Committed To Retirement After World Cup

Raza described the opportunity to feature in a home World Cup near the end of his career as a personal blessing, adding that playing in a global tournament was a fitting way to retire.

Asked whether Zimbabwe’s potential WTC entry could tempt him to reconsider, Raza firmly ruled out a change of heart.

He said he had made peace with his decision and would not reverse it once the time came to retire.

However, Raza strongly backed Zimbabwe’s potential inclusion in the WTC, believing it could accelerate the country’s cricketing development and improve performances across formats.

The all-rounder also credited Test cricket with playing a major role in his own development, despite his limited number of appearances in the longest format.

Zimbabwe Hope To Make Home Advantage Count

Raza acknowledged that gaining a home advantage at an ICC event would be challenging because the governing body controls tournament arrangements. Nevertheless, Zimbabwe will look to make the most of any fair opportunities available.

Zimbabwe’s World Cup fixture against India on October 24, 2027, is scheduled to mark the first World Cup match at the newly built Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls.

Raza expressed excitement about the venue’s launch and highlighted the area’s natural beauty, including its spectacular sunsets, peaceful surroundings and welcoming atmosphere.

Raza Backs Zimbabwe’s Next Generation

Looking beyond his own career, Raza identified batter Brian Bennett and bowler Newman Nyamhuri as two young players capable of becoming key figures for Zimbabwe after the current senior generation moves on.

His backing reflects confidence in the country’s emerging talent as Zimbabwe prepares for a major period in its cricketing history, with the 2027 World Cup offering a significant opportunity on home soil.
