FIH Pro League Thriller: India’s Brave Comeback Not Enough to Escape Danger Zone

Despite a spirited 2–2 draw against Argentina, Indian women’s hockey team falters in shoot-out, leaving relegation threat looming large.

In a high-octane encounter at London’s Lee Valley Hockey Stadium, the Indian women’s hockey team produced a spirited comeback to hold World No. 2 Argentina to a 2–2 draw in regulation time. But the joy was short-lived as India crumbled in the shoot-out, missing out on the crucial bonus point—a result that may come back to haunt them in their fight for survival in the FIH Pro League.

Argentina, known for their aggressive set-pieces and penalty corner precision, stamped their authority early in the match. By halftime, they were comfortably ahead 2–0, courtesy of goals from Agustina Gorzelany and Sofia Cairo, both resulting from well-executed penalty corners. India, for all their intent and effort, lacked the finishing touch in the first half.

But the second half saw a different Indian side take the field. There was energy, sharper movement, and a renewed hunger. In the 50th minute, Navneet Kaur ignited the comeback with a brilliant field goal, slicing through Argentina’s defense with composure. Just six minutes later, young Deepika fired in a powerful drag flick off a penalty corner to equalize, sending the Indian bench into wild celebrations.

India’s revival, however, was halted in the tense shoot-out that followed. Nerves got the better of the strikers as Deepika, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Lalremsiami and Baljeet Kaur all missed their chances. In contrast, Argentina kept their cool, with Brisa Bruggesser and Sofia Cairo converting, securing the extra point.

Coach Harendra Singh, though proud of the comeback, didn’t shy away from highlighting the missed opportunity. “The way we recovered was excellent. We were sharp and agile, but lacked the calmness in the shoot-out. That’s something we must fix immediately.”

The result has left India seventh in the Pro League standings, just three points ahead of last-placed Germany. With the threat of relegation to the Nations League looming, India’s remaining matches—against Belgium and China—are now must-win encounters.

India showed heart, resilience, and flashes of brilliance, but unless they turn their grit into results, their place in the Pro League could soon be in jeopardy. The clock is ticking, and the margin for error is shrinking.
