Winners, top scorers, records: A brief history of the FIFA Club World Cup

The 21st edition of the FIFA Club World Cup will begin on Saturday, June 14, in the United States, with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami taking on Egyptian giants Al Ahly in Miami, Florida.

Despite ongoing debates and criticism over the tournament’s revamped and expanded format, FIFA president Gianni Infantino remains confident in its potential to become the leading global club competition.

Though relatively young, the tournament has built a rich legacy with world-class champions from all corners of the globe.

2000-2006: Brazilian Clubs Dominate Early Editions

The inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in 2000 featured an all-Brazilian final between Corinthians and Vasco da Gama, held at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracanã Stadium. The game ended 0-0 after extra time, with Corinthians winning 4-3 on penalties.

Big names such as Romario, Nicolas Anelka, Raul, and Dwight Yorke featured in the tournament. However, due to challenges with broadcast and marketing rights, the competition was suspended for five years.

When it returned in 2005, Brazilian teams continued their strong run. São Paulo edged Liverpool 1-0 in the 2005 final in Yokohama, Japan, and Internacional repeated the feat in 2006, defeating Barcelona by the same margin.

2007-2011: Europe Takes Over

European dominance began in 2007 when AC Milan, led by stars like Kaka and Inzaghi, beat Argentina’s Boca Juniors 4-2 to claim the trophy.

This ushered in a period of European control with Manchester United winning in 2008, followed by Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, and Inter Milan in 2010.

2012: A Brazilian Resurgence

Brazil briefly reclaimed glory in 2012 when Corinthians defeated European champions Chelsea 1-0, securing their second Club World Cup title.

2013-2023: A Decade of European Supremacy

Europe asserted firm control over the next decade. Barcelona and Real Madrid led the charge, accounting for six of the 11 titles from 2013 to 2023.

Bayern Munich won twice, in 2013 and 2020, while three English clubs also claimed the trophy during this span.

Which Club Has the Most Titles?

Real Madrid stands alone with the most Club World Cup titles. The Spanish giants first won the title in 2014 and then added three more from 2016 to 2018. Their most recent victory came in 2022 with a 5-3 triumph over Al Hilal in Morocco.

Top Goal Scorer in FIFA Club World Cup History

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals in Club World Cup history, scoring seven times across eight matches for Manchester United and Real Madrid. FIFA president Infantino even attempted to lure Ronaldo back into the tournament by encouraging a move to a 2025 participant team, but the Portuguese legend declined.

Which Nation Has the Most Club World Cup Champions?

Spain leads the all-time list with eight titles—thanks to Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Brazil and England are tied for second with four titles each, followed by Germany and Italy with two apiece.
