India’s Nishad Kumar has proved that champions can thrive beyond their signature events. The two-time Paralympic silver medallist won gold in the men’s T47 long jump at the Asian Para Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Monday, October 19, recording a best effort of 7.11 metres.

The victory was particularly impressive because long jump is not Nishad’s usual discipline. Known primarily for his high-jump achievements, the Indian athlete stepped into a new event and emerged as the continental champion, delivering one of India’s standout performances in para athletics.

Nishad Kumar’s 7.11m Jump Secures Asian Para Games Gold

Nishad produced a winning distance of 7.11m to finish at the top of the men’s T47 long jump standings. His result put him ahead of Uzbekistan’s Omadbek Khasanov, who claimed silver with 6.99m, while Sri Lanka’s Mohammadu Safran secured bronze with 6.55m.

The margin between Nishad and the silver medallist was 0.12 metres, underlining the Indian athlete’s advantage in a competitive field.

According to reports published after the event, Nishad recorded 6.95m in his opening attempt before reaching 7.09m in his second. He then matched his eventual winning distance of 7.11m in both his third and fifth attempts.

The performance gave India its first gold medal in para athletics at the 2026 Games and its second gold overall at that stage of the competition.

From High Jump Specialist to Long Jump Champion

Nishad’s victory carries added significance because of his established reputation in the high jump. He is a two-time Paralympic silver medallist and has previously won gold in the men’s T47 high jump at the Asian Para Games.

His decision to compete in long jump presented a different technical challenge. Instead of clearing a bar, athletes must combine speed, take-off precision and flight technique to achieve the greatest possible distance.

Nishad’s ability to produce a 7.11m jump in his first major competition in the event demonstrated his versatility. Rather than relying only on his established reputation, he made an immediate impact in unfamiliar territory.

The long jump gold also adds momentum ahead of his high-jump competition, his principal event at the Games.

Nishad Kumar’s Journey Beyond the Sporting Arena

Born in Himachal Pradesh, Nishad lost his right hand in a grass-cutting machine accident when he was six years old. He went on to build a career in para athletics, becoming one of India’s leading high jumpers and earning medals on the Paralympic stage.

His progress reflects years of training and adaptation, but his latest result is notable for a specific reason: he has now demonstrated his ability to succeed in a discipline beyond the event in which he made his name.

The T47 classification is used for athletes with eligible upper-limb impairments. Nishad’s performance in this category adds another major result to an already decorated career.

What Nishad Kumar’s Gold Means for India

Nishad’s victory is more than an individual medal. It strengthens India’s para-athletics campaign and provides an early boost as the country’s athletes compete across track and field, shooting, swimming, judo and other disciplines.

His 7.11m winning jump also offers a compelling story of adaptability. An athlete recognised for his high-jump achievements has entered a new event and immediately reached the top of the podium.

With his main high-jump event still to come, Nishad Kumar will remain one of the Indian athletes to watch as the Asian Para Games 2026 continues in Japan.
