India’s Kokila and Kapil Parmar won silver and bronze medals respectively in judo at the Asian Para Games on Monday. Kokila finished second in the women’s J2 -52kg category, while Kapil secured third place in the men’s J1 -70kg division at the Aichi Prefectural Martial Arts Hall in Nagoya.

Kokila, a bronze medallist at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, lost the final to Kyrgyzstan’s Aibike Ulanbek Kyzy, who secured an Ippon in just 21 seconds to claim gold.

Kokila Reaches Final After Semifinal Win

Kokila began the day with a 1-0 victory over China’s Yi Liu in the semifinals. She registered a waza-ari and a yuko, while her opponent managed one waza-ari.

The judoka from Kasun village in Haryana’s Jind district had won bronze in the -48kg category at the previous Asian Para Games in 2023. She also represented India at the 2024 Paris Paralympics and won silver at the Judo Grand Prix in Astana earlier this year.

Kapil Bounces Back To Claim Bronze

Kapil, who won silver at the previous Asian Para Games, settled for bronze after losing 0-1 to Indonesia’s Junaedi in the semifinals.

He responded in the bronze-medal playoff against another Indonesian, Ahnaf Rafli Shidqi, winning 1-0 with an Ippon in a contest lasting just over a minute.

“I came here with the intent of winning gold but ended with a bronze. Fortune was not with me today as far as gold is concerned but I am grateful for this bronze,” Kapil said.

He added that he had worked hard for the medal, which comes after a difficult period as his mother has been unwell. Kapil previously won bronze at the 2024 Paris Paralympics and claimed gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Championships.

Understanding Judo Classifications

Para judo for athletes with visual impairments is contested in J1 and J2 categories. J1 athletes have more severe visual impairments and may be completely blind, while J2 judokas generally retain more functional vision.
