FIH Pro League 2025: Argentina Edge Past India 4–3 in Thrilling Contest

June 11, 2025 | Amstelveen

The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a narrow 3–4 defeat to Argentina in a high-voltage clash in the 2025 FIH Pro League at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen. Despite multiple comebacks, India’s defensive lapses and missed opportunities cost them their third straight match on the European leg of the tour.

Early Lead and Rapid Exchanges

Argentina struck early in the third minute, capitalizing on a poor clearance from Amit Rohidas. Matías Rey’s shot took a deflection off goalkeeper Krishan Pathak and went in, giving the South Americans an early 1–0 advantage. India responded in the 12th minute through a well-executed penalty corner from skipper Harmanpreet Singh, who leveled the scores 1–1.

The second quarter saw Argentina regain the lead through Lucas Martinez, who finished from close range in the 17th minute. The South Americans carried their 2–1 lead into the half-time break despite India’s persistent circle entries.

Topsy-Turvy Third Quarter

India started the second half aggressively. Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 33rd minute to bring India level at 2–2. However, Argentina responded immediately. Santiago Tarazona found the net just 30 seconds later to restore their lead at 3–2.

India refused to back down. In the 42nd minute, Abhishek pounced on a loose ball inside the Argentine circle to make it 3–3. The back-and-forth nature of the match made for an exciting third quarter with both teams matching each other in intensity and creativity.

Final Blow and Missed Chances

Argentina delivered the decisive blow at the very start of the fourth quarter. Lucio Mendez scored within 18 seconds of the restart to make it 4–3. India had chances to equalize again, including a late penalty corner, but failed to convert as the Argentine defense held firm.

Key Takeaways

Harmanpreet Singh was the standout performer for India, scoring twice and leading from the front.

Defensive lapses, particularly at the start of quarters, proved costly for the Indian side.

Despite showing strong attacking intent, India’s inability to finish key opportunities defined the outcome.

Standings Impact

This defeat leaves India with 15 points from 11 matches, the same as Argentina and Spain. With the league tightly contested, every remaining match becomes crucial for qualification implications.

Looking Ahead

India will face Argentina again on June 12 at the same venue. The rematch offers an immediate opportunity to bounce back and end the losing streak, but the team must address its defensive vulnerabilities and capitalize on scoring chances to stay in contention for a top-four finish.
