Leeds Hold Manchester United As Carrick’s Winless Run Continues
Manchester United’s difficult run continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday. Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead before Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised early in the second half, denying Michael Carrick a much-needed Premier League victory.
The result extended United’s winless run in all competitions to six matches, while Leeds remained unbeaten at home since March.
Mbeumo Gives United The Lead
The match began amid a hostile atmosphere, with both sides involved in a physical opening spell. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced a full-stretch save to deny Nico Elvedi before Mbeumo missed a free header at the other end.
The forward made amends in the 35th minute, battling past James Justin to meet an excellent Youri Tielemans pass and give Manchester United the lead.
Calvert-Lewin Rescues A Point For Leeds
Leeds responded shortly after the break when Calvert-Lewin beat Mbeumo to a loose ball following a corner. Tarik Muharemovic had initially made contact with the delivery before the striker finished to bring the hosts level in the 51st minute.
Both teams had opportunities to find a winner. United captain Bruno Fernandes fired wide, while Anton Stach failed to keep his first-time effort on target as the contest ended in a draw.
Pressure Mounts On Carrick
United have now recorded just one league win in their opening seven matches of the season, their lowest tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign in 40 years.
Carrick, who was handed a two-year contract after an impressive interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s departure, will be under pressure to improve results quickly.
Despite a more organised midfield performance, United were unable to secure all three points after conceding from a set-piece situation.
Leeds, meanwhile, remain unbeaten at home in all competitions since March and sit three points above United, who are 13th in the table.
