Vishvajit More Makes History With U23 World Silver
Vishvajit More scripted history by becoming the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win a silver medal at the U23 World Championships in Las Vegas on Thursday.
More narrowly missed out on gold after losing a thrilling 12-13 final against Georgia’s Koba Karumidze. The Indian wrestler had previously won two bronze medals at the same competition.
More Falls Just Short Of Historic Gold
More began his campaign with a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata before defeating Iranian U20 world champion Armin Shamsipour 8-1 in the quarterfinals.
He then overcame Russia’s Malik Gigiev 7-4 in the semifinals to secure his place in the title clash.
Other Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers failed to reach the medal rounds. Chetan lost his pre-quarterfinal bout in the 63kg category, while Karan Kamboj suffered a technical superiority defeat in the 87kg qualification round.
Komal, Diksha Remain In Medal Contention
In the women’s competition, Komal lost her semifinal to Ukraine’s Alina Filipovych by technical superiority and will now compete for bronze.
Diksha Malik also remains in contention for a bronze medal in the 76kg category.
However, Mansi Lather’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals after she suffered a narrow 9-10 defeat against Italy’s Laura Godino in the 68kg category.
