New Delhi, August 18, 2026: Lakshya Sen’s opening assignment at the BWF World Championships was anything but straightforward. The Indian shuttler had to contend with a tricky drift, an opponent who refused to surrender easily and the pressure of beginning a major home tournament with expectations firmly on his shoulders.

But once Sen adjusted to the conditions, the contest changed completely.

The 14th-seeded Indian recovered from losing the opening game to defeat Austria’s Collins Valentine Filimon 16-21, 21-8, 21-4, booking his place in the second round of the World Championships.

Match Score

Lakshya Sen (India) def. Collins Valentine Filimon (Austria) 16-21, 21-8, 21-4

Result: Sen won 2-1

Games played: 3

Second-round qualification: Lakshya Sen

A difficult start for Sen

The opening game exposed the biggest challenge facing Sen: the conditions inside the stadium.

The shuttle was not behaving predictably, making delicate net shots and attacking strokes particularly difficult to control. Filimon adapted quicker and managed to put Sen under pressure with his attacking play.

Sen remained within touching distance for much of the game, but a combination of errors and Filimon’s sharper finishing allowed the Austrian to take the opener 21-16.

For a player beginning his World Championships campaign in front of a home crowd, it could easily have become a nervy situation.

Instead, Sen treated the opening game as a lesson.

The turning point: Sen takes control

The second game brought a completely different Lakshya Sen to the court.

Rather than trying to overpower Filimon immediately, Sen began constructing rallies more patiently. He used his movement better, looked for opportunities to attack and became increasingly comfortable with the drift.

The Indian quickly moved ahead and refused to allow Filimon back into the contest.

Even when the Austrian attempted to stay close early in the game, Sen continued to increase the intensity. His sharper attacking shots and improved control eventually opened a sizeable gap.

From there, the second game became one-way traffic.

Sen wrapped it up 21-8, forcing the match into a decider.

A dominant deciding game

If the second game demonstrated Sen’s ability to adapt, the third showed the difference that confidence can make.

The Indian controlled the rallies from the beginning and kept Filimon under constant pressure. His attacking shots became more effective, while his defensive retrievals prevented the Austrian from finding an easy route back into the contest.

Filimon managed only four points.

Sen closed out the deciding game 21-4, completing a comeback that underlined his ability to solve problems during a match rather than allowing difficult conditions to dictate the outcome.

Drift becomes Sen’s biggest opponent

The unusual court conditions were a major talking point during the match.

Sen had already been preparing for unpredictable drift in the build-up to the tournament. Such conditions can significantly alter the trajectory and speed of the shuttle, particularly affecting net play, lifts and attacking strokes.

That preparation became valuable once the match began.

After struggling to judge the shuttle in the first game, Sen gradually changed his shot selection and began playing according to the conditions rather than fighting against them.

That tactical adjustment proved decisive.

Why the victory matters

The opening-round win gives Sen an important confidence boost at a World Championships being played on home soil.

The Indian did not have everything working from the start. He lost the first game and was forced to rethink his approach. What followed, however, was precisely the type of response required in a major tournament.

The 21-8, 21-4 scoreline across the final two games is particularly significant. It shows that Sen did not merely scrape through after falling behind; he eventually established complete control.

Sen has already demonstrated this season that he can produce significant results against the world’s leading players. Earlier in 2026, he defeated reigning world champion and then-World No. 1 Shi Yuqi 23-21, 19-21, 21-17 at the All England Open before reaching the final.

That experience of navigating pressure matches could prove valuable as his World Championships campaign progresses.

The bigger picture

For Sen, the first round was ultimately less about the opening-game defeat and more about how he responded to it.

A difficult court, an opponent who took advantage of the early uncertainty and the weight of playing at home all tested him. Sen answered by changing his tactics, settling into the conditions and gradually turning the match into his own.

The challenge will only become tougher in the rounds ahead.

But after a shaky beginning, Sen has made one thing clear: he is ready to fight for every point on home soil.
