Charlie Smyth said he was “absolutely buzzing” after making his NFL debut for the New Orleans Saints in their 21-17 defeat to the Miami Dolphins. The 24-year-old kicked a 56-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and executed a clean onside kick at Hard Rock Stadium.
Family’s Marathon Journey
Smyth’s family travelled nearly 23 hours to reach Miami after delays. The former Down GAA goalkeeper only learned on Friday that he would play, following the Saints’ decision to release kicker Blake Grupe.
Grabbing His Chance
Having previously featured only in pre-season, Smyth was unsure whether a scoring opportunity would come. But when Miami went 11 points ahead, he realised the field goal was likely. He stayed ready and delivered under pressure.
Praise From the Coach
Saints head coach Kellen Moore hailed Smyth’s debut as “phenomenal”, praising both the long field goal and the well-placed onside kick. Smyth has been part of the franchise since March 2024 and had waited 18 months for this chance.
Buzzing for the Future
Smyth admitted mixed emotions after Grupe’s exit but said he felt fully prepared. “I was excited to get the opportunity,” he said. “I was absolutely buzzing.”
