Jonah Koech’s remarkable rise in American middle-distance running has taken a dramatic turn, with his 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships 1,500m title being wiped from the record books following a blood-doping violation.

The Kenyan-born American runner has accepted a three-year period of ineligibility, bringing an abrupt end to a season that had seen him produce some of the biggest performances of his career.

The case also reshapes the official results of the 2025 USATF men’s 1,500m final, with Koech’s victory now removed and Ethan Strand elevated to the national title.

From surprise champion to disqualified winner

Koech produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships when he won the men’s 1,500m final at Hayward Field.

He crossed the line in a personal-best 3:30.17, finishing ahead of Ethan Strand and Olympic champion Cole Hocker. Hobbs Kessler and Yared Nuguse were among the high-profile runners left outside the top three.

At the time, the performance was viewed as a breakthrough moment for an athlete better known for his 800m background.

However, the subsequent anti-doping case has now changed the significance of that race completely.

What happened?

The sanction followed irregular findings in Koech’s Athlete Biological Passport (ABP), a system that monitors biological markers over time to identify changes that can indicate blood manipulation.

According to the reported sanction details, the anti-doping case resulted in Koech accepting a three-year ban beginning July 17, 2026. His relevant results were disqualified, including the performance that gave him the 2025 US 1,500m championship.

The consequence is more than a suspension: the performance that established Koech as a US national champion has effectively been removed from the competitive record.

Revised 2025 US 1,500m Championship Podium

Following Koech’s disqualification, the podium changes to:

Gold: Ethan Strand

Silver: Cole Hocker

Bronze: Hobbs Kessler

Koech had originally won the final in 3:30.17, with Strand just behind in 3:30.25 and Hocker third in 3:30.37.

The change is particularly significant because the race was also a selection event for the US team heading toward the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

Koech’s extraordinary 2025 season

The 2025 campaign had appeared to be the defining season of Koech’s career.

The former 800m specialist opened the year with a stunning victory in the 1,500m at the Rabat Diamond League, running 3:31.43 for a personal best at the time. That performance made him only the third American man to win a Diamond League 1,500m or mile race.

He later produced another major breakthrough over 800m, recording 1:43.32 in Nairobi.

His national championship victory then took his 1,500m personal best down to 3:30.17.

Key performances

Event: Men’s 1,500m

2025 USATF Championships: 3:30.17

Rabat Diamond League: 3:31.43

800m personal best: 1:43.32

Ban: Three years

Ineligibility begins: July 17, 2026

A career built around the 800m

Koech’s emergence as a 1,500m contender was particularly notable because his earlier career was heavily associated with the 800m.

He had already established himself as a high-level American middle-distance runner before his 2025 breakthrough. His 800m personal best of 1:43.32 showed the speed that helped him become dangerous over the longer middle-distance event.

His development made the 2025 season look like the arrival of a new US 1,500m contender. Instead, the doping sanction has left his most important achievements of that season under a very different spotlight.

What the case means for American athletics

The consequences extend beyond Koech himself.

A national championship is not simply an individual achievement. It can determine championship selection, rankings, recognition and opportunities for other athletes.

Koech’s disqualification therefore changes the official history of the 2025 USATF 1,500m final and restores Strand, Hocker and Kessler to the top three positions.

For the sport, the case is also another reminder of why biological monitoring and long-term anti-doping systems remain important. Blood-doping cases can sometimes emerge through changes in an athlete’s biological profile rather than through a conventional positive test for a specific substance.

The bigger picture

Koech’s story is now one of the most striking reversals in recent US middle-distance running.

A season that began with a surprise Diamond League victory and culminated in a national championship has ended with his title removed and a three-year suspension.

For Ethan Strand, the revised result gives him a national championship that was initially celebrated as a runner-up finish. For Cole Hocker and Hobbs Kessler, the official record also changes.

But the central lesson is broader than the result of one race: in elite sport, performances are never truly secure until the anti-doping process is complete.

Koech’s 2025 season once looked like the launch of a major American middle-distance career. The latest ruling has instead turned it into a cautionary chapter about performance, integrity and the lasting consequences of anti-doping violations.
