Indian judoka Ishroop Narang stayed in contention for a Commonwealth Games medal by defeating Cameroon’s Georgika Wesly Djengue Moune in the women’s 78kg repechage to book her place in the bronze medal bout on Sunday.
The 19-year-old from Punjab secured victory by waza-ari despite her taller opponent scoring two yukos during the contest.
Earlier, Ishroop’s bid for gold ended in the quarterfinals after she lost by ippon to England’s Emma Reid. The Indian received two shido penalties, while Reid registered two waza-ari scores to seal the victory within regulation time.
Golden Score Win Started Campaign
Ishroop began her campaign with a hard-fought victory over Scotland’s Nicole Wood in the Round of 16.
After the bout remained level at the end of regulation time, with both judokas receiving one shido each, the contest moved into golden score. Ishroop finally broke the deadlock one minute and 40 seconds into extra time, scoring a decisive yuko to advance.
Avtar, Yash Bow Out Early
India’s challenge in the men’s events ended early as Avtar Singh suffered an ippon defeat to Cyprus’ Aristos Michael in the men’s -100kg Round of 16.
Yash Ghangas also exited the men’s +100kg competition after a 0-1 defeat to Wales’ Joshua Whitehouse. Whitehouse scored the decisive yuko midway through the contest, while Ghangas accumulated two shido penalties and was unable to recover.
