Scotland’s next head coach will inherit one of the biggest rebuilding jobs in recent years after Steve Clarke’s surprise resignation following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While Clarke guided Scotland to three consecutive major tournaments, his departure leaves the Scottish Football Association searching for a successor capable of balancing short-term success with a long-term squad overhaul.

Ageing core still has plenty to offer

Scotland’s experienced core remains one of the team’s biggest strengths. Captain Andy Robertson, John McGinn, Ryan Christie and several other senior players are all in their 30s, while Scott McTominay is approaching that milestone.

Clarke insisted the group is “not finished yet” and believes their experience can help Scotland qualify for Euro 2028, where they will benefit from host nation status.

However, the next manager must gradually introduce younger players while maintaining results at international level.

Young talent must fill key gaps

Scotland have exciting midfield prospects in Lewis Ferguson, Billy Gilmour, Tyler Fletcher and Lennon Miller, but several other areas remain a concern.

Goalkeeping and central defence lack established successors, while attacking options remain limited despite the emergence of Findlay Curtis. Middlesbrough striker Tommy Conway and Hellas Verona forward Kieron Bowie offer promise, but there is a shortage of experienced Scottish players between the ages of 22 and 26 across multiple positions.

That gap leaves the incoming coach with the difficult task of blending veterans with an inexperienced next generation.

Player development under scrutiny

Scotland’s recent tournament exits have highlighted a lack of pace and athleticism compared to many international rivals.

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin believes the issue goes beyond tactics, arguing that Scottish football must improve the development of young players and provide more first-team opportunities at an earlier age.

The Scottish FA acknowledged similar concerns in a 2024 report, leading to the introduction of new cooperation agreements aimed at increasing competitive minutes for young players.

Mulholland faces immediate challenge

New Scottish FA chief football officer Craig Mulholland, who officially begins his role this week, now oversees one of the federation’s most important appointments in years.

With the experienced core nearing the latter stages of their careers and the next generation still developing, Scotland’s next head coach must manage a delicate transition while keeping the national team competitive ahead of Euro 2028.
