England-Mexico World Cup Clash to Go Ahead as Scheduled Despite Storm Threat

England and Mexico will meet in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash as scheduled despite forecasts of severe weather in Mexico City.

FIFA has confirmed that the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash between England and Mexico will kick off as originally scheduled despite concerns over thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for Mexico City. The highly anticipated encounter at the iconic Estadio Azteca will begin at 6 p.m. local time on Sunday.

Tournament organisers had considered bringing the match forward by several hours after local weather forecasts warned of possible storms and flooding. However, after reviewing logistical, operational and broadcasting implications, FIFA decided to retain the original kickoff time.

The uncertainty briefly unsettled preparations for both teams, with reports of a possible schedule change prompting discussions between officials. Mexico had earlier experienced a rain delay in its Round of 32 victory over Ecuador, adding to concerns about weather disruptions during the knockout stage.

England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating DR Congo, while co-hosts Mexico booked their place with a convincing win over Ecuador. The winners of Sunday’s contest will progress to the quarterfinals as both sides look to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

With severe weather still forecast, organisers remain prepared to implement safety protocols if necessary, but for now the marquee Round of 16 showdown will proceed according to schedule.
