Lovlina Borgohain sets sights on elusive Commonwealth Games medal

Indian boxing star Lovlina Borgohain has made it clear that winning a medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is one of her biggest goals of the season. Despite building one of the finest resumes in Indian boxing, the Olympic bronze medallist is yet to stand on the Commonwealth Games podium—a gap she is determined to fill this time.

The 28-year-old has already earned an Olympic bronze medal, a World Championship gold, two World Championship bronze medals and an Asian Games silver. However, the Commonwealth Games remains the only major multi-sport event where she is yet to win a medal.

Third Commonwealth Games, one clear mission

Glasgow 2026 will mark Lovlina’s third Commonwealth Games appearance. She competed at the 2018 Gold Coast Games and the 2022 Birmingham Games, but on both occasions her campaign ended in the quarterfinals.

2018 Gold Coast: Lost in the women’s welterweight quarterfinals.

2022 Birmingham: Reached the quarterfinals before suffering a narrow 2-3 split-decision defeat, missing out on a medal once again.

This repeated quarterfinal exit has become a major source of motivation for the Assam boxer as she prepares for Glasgow.

Strong form boosts confidence

Lovlina heads into the Commonwealth Games with confidence after enjoying an impressive run in recent competitions. She recently captured the gold medal in the women’s 75kg category at the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix in Czechia, underlining her readiness for the busy international season ahead.

The Commonwealth Games will also serve as an important stepping stone before the Asian Games later this year.

A decorated career seeking one final piece

Few Indian boxers possess a record as accomplished as Lovlina’s. Her achievements include:

Bronze Medal – Tokyo Olympics (2021)

Gold Medal – World Boxing Championships (2023)

Bronze Medals – World Championships (2018 & 2019)

Silver Medal – Asian Games

Multiple international medals across prestigious tournaments.

Yet, the Commonwealth Games medal continues to elude her, making Glasgow one of the most significant tournaments of her career.

Eyes firmly on Glasgow

With valuable experience, improved maturity and encouraging recent form, Lovlina believes this is the perfect opportunity to rewrite her Commonwealth Games story. A podium finish in Glasgow would complete an already remarkable medal collection and further strengthen her status as one of India’s greatest female boxers.

Career Highlights

Olympic Bronze Medal – Tokyo 2021

World Champion – 2023

Two-time World Championship Bronze Medallist

Asian Games Silver Medallist

Commonwealth Games appearances: 2018, 2022, 2026

Best CWG result so far: Quarterfinalist (2018 & 2022)
