World Cup 2026 VAR Storm: Mbappe Penalty Call Leaves Top Referees Baffled Despite France’s Winning Start

A controversial second-half VAR decision overshadowed France's 3-1 victory over Senegal as football experts, former referees and players questioned why Kylian Mbappe was denied a penalty.

France Win, But VAR Takes Centre Stage at World Cup 2026

France kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Senegal, but the biggest talking point from the match was not the result—it was a highly controversial VAR decision that stunned football’s refereeing community.

The incident occurred in the 58th minute at the New York New Jersey Stadium when Kylian Mbappe burst into the penalty area and went down following a challenge from Sadio Mane. Referee Alireza Faghani was instructed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

After watching the replay, Faghani returned to the field and initially appeared to indicate a penalty, prompting celebrations among French supporters. However, moments later he awarded a goal-kick instead, explaining that Mbappe had initiated the contact rather than being fouled.

Refereeing Experts Left Confused

The decision immediately sparked debate across the football world.

Former World Cup final assistant referee Darren Cann revealed that several elite referees contacted him during the game, saying they could not understand how the penalty had been rejected. According to Cann, the replay clearly showed contact from Mane, making the decision difficult to justify.

Former England captain Alan Shearer also questioned the verdict, arguing that Mane’s challenge clearly clipped Mbappe from behind. Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin was equally critical, calling the explanation that Mbappe had initiated the contact difficult to accept.

France Still Get the Job Done

Fortunately for France, the controversial decision did not affect the final outcome.

The two-time world champions recovered to defeat Senegal 3-1, with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice to continue his remarkable international form.

The match also saw Mbappe reach two historic milestones:

He became France’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer, overtaking Olivier Giroud with 58 international goals.

He also became France’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history, taking his World Cup tally to 14 goals in just 15 matches.

Deschamps Questions the Decision

France head coach Didier Deschamps admitted after the match that he believed his side should have received the penalty.

While respecting the referee’s authority, Deschamps suggested the replay did not support the conclusion that Mbappe had created the contact himself, adding that, in his opinion, the challenge deserved a spot-kick.

VAR Debate Continues

The incident has once again placed VAR under intense scrutiny during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although the technology was introduced to eliminate clear refereeing mistakes, this decision has instead raised fresh questions about consistency and interpretation. With experienced referees and football pundits openly disagreeing with the outcome, the debate over VAR’s application looks set to continue throughout the tournament.

Match Result

France 3-1 Senegal

Key Records

France opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a victory.

Kylian Mbappe became France’s all-time leading men’s scorer with 58 international goals.

Mbappe also set a new French record with 14 FIFA World Cup goals, the most by a French player.
