Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers has agreed a new one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, extending his career into a remarkable 22nd NFL season.

According to reports, the 42-year-old has signed a deal worth a guaranteed $22m (£16.5m), which could rise to $25m (£18.8m) through incentives. Rodgers had previously remained undecided over both his future in the sport and a possible return to Pittsburgh after joining the franchise last season.

Rodgers Continues Legendary NFL Career

The four-time NFL MVP remains one of the league’s most decorated quarterbacks. Rodgers won the Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers in 2011 and ranks fourth all-time for touchdown passes and fifth for passing yards.

Last year, Rodgers joined Pittsburgh on a relatively modest one-year contract worth $13.65m (£10m), one of the lower salaries among starting quarterbacks in the NFL.

Despite questions over his age and fitness, Rodgers guided the Steelers to a 10-7 record and their first AFC North division title since 2020 before they were knocked out in the play-offs by the Houston Texans.

Reunion With Former Coach McCarthy

Rodgers will also reunite with head coach Mike McCarthy, who replaced long-serving Steelers coach Mike Tomlin earlier this year.

McCarthy previously worked with Rodgers during their successful spell together at Green Bay, where they won the Super Bowl and enjoyed one of the most successful quarterback-coach partnerships in recent NFL history.

After leaving Green Bay in 2023 for the New York Jets, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles tendon on his debut, missing almost the entire season. He returned the following year but was eventually released after a disappointing campaign.

Steelers Planning For The Future

While Rodgers remains Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback, the franchise has also begun preparing for the future.

The Steelers selected quarterback Drew Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft and could also continue developing 2025 draft pick Will Howard as a potential long-term successor.

Rodgers missed one game last season because of a broken wrist, and concerns over mobility remain. However, Pittsburgh clearly believe the experienced quarterback still has enough quality left to lead another play-off challenge.
