Transport prices for fans travelling to matches at MetLife Stadium during the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been reduced after strong criticism from supporters over the original costs.

Train fares to the stadium have been cut from $150 (£111) to $98 (£73), while shuttle bus prices have dropped from $80 (£59) to $20 (£15).

The venue, which will be renamed New York/New Jersey Stadium during the tournament because of FIFA sponsorship rules, is set to host eight World Cup matches including the final and one of England’s group-stage fixtures.

Previously, supporters had criticised the pricing as excessive, especially because a normal return train ticket from Penn Station to the stadium usually costs around $12.90 (£9.50).

Football Supporters’ Association representative Thomas Concannon had earlier described the original prices as “astronomical” and far beyond standard event transport costs.

FIFA Under Pressure Over Travel Costs

The issue sparked criticism towards FIFA after fans pointed out that transport had been free during previous World Cups in Russia and Qatar.

The United States had also reportedly committed to offering free travel in its original 2018 hosting agreement before the policy changed in 2023.

Mikie Sherrill had publicly criticised FIFA for refusing to subsidise transport and insisted local taxpayers would not cover the additional expenses.

In a social media statement, Sherrill confirmed that sponsorship agreements helped reduce the train ticket prices without using taxpayer money.

Meanwhile, Kathy Hochul announced that round-trip shuttle bus fares had been reduced by 75%.

She also revealed that 20% of transport tickets would be reserved for New York residents because they are helping host the tournament.

England And Scotland Fans Affected By Price Changes

The transport issue is particularly important for supporters of England national football team and Scotland national football team.

England will face Ghana national football team in Foxborough on 23 June before taking on Panama national football team at MetLife Stadium on 27 June.

Scotland, managed by Steve Clarke, will also play two group-stage games in Foxborough against Haiti national football team and Morocco national football team.

However, concerns still remain elsewhere in the United States.

Fans travelling to Gillette Stadium in Boston are still facing major price increases, with round-trip train tickets from central Boston rising from $20 (£15) to $80 (£60) during the tournament.

Other host cities have maintained cheaper options, with Kansas City offering $15 return shuttle buses and Philadelphia keeping standard public transport fares at $2.90.
