Kamil Holan has been named as the rider who died following a crash during qualifying at the North West 200 in Northern Ireland.
The fatal accident occurred on Thursday morning at Station Corner during the opening Superbike qualifying session of the event. Holan, 48, succumbed to his injuries despite immediate assistance from emergency services at the scene.
The Czech rider becomes the first fatality at the North West 200 since Malachi Mitchell-Thomas died during a Supertwins race in 2016. He is also the 20th rider to lose his life in the 97-year history of the iconic road racing event.
Tributes Pour In For Experienced Racer
Holan’s team, Hefty74, paid an emotional tribute to the rider, describing him as “a wonderful friend and a man of great character”.
The team said his humility, passion and smile would be deeply missed, adding that his legacy would continue both within the team and among those who knew him personally.
Holan, who lived in Prague, was a respected figure in European road racing and had achieved several successes throughout his career.
His most notable triumph came at the Manx Grand Prix in 2012, when he became the first Czech rider to win at the event after claiming victory in the Newcomers ‘A’ race.
He also competed regularly at the Isle of Man TT, where his best finish came in the 2018 Superbike race, ending in 20th place.
Event Continued After Family Approval
Organisers initially withheld Holan’s identity at the request of his family before confirming it later on Thursday.
The remainder of Thursday’s planned practice sessions were shifted to the evening following the incident, while the scheduled races for that day were cancelled and will not be added to Saturday’s programme.
The North West 200 is staged on closed public roads linking Portstewart, Coleraine and Portrush across Northern Ireland’s north coast.
Station Corner, where the crash occurred, is regarded as one of the fastest and most demanding sections of the circuit.
