Mendoza’s rise driven by mother’s inspiring journey

Fernando Mendoza announced himself as the next big star of the NFL after being selected first overall in the 2026 Draft, but his journey to the top has been shaped as much by family as football.

The 22-year-old quarterback, fresh off leading Indiana to a national championship, paid an emotional tribute to his mother, whose battle with Multiple sclerosis has been central to his story.

Emotional tribute to mother

During his Heisman Trophy speech, Mendoza broke down while thanking his mother Elsa, calling her his “light” and biggest inspiration.

Living with multiple sclerosis for nearly two decades, she is now a wheelchair user. Mendoza often credits her resilience and positivity as the driving force behind his mindset on and off the field.

He has also supported awareness efforts, raising funds for the National MS Society in her honour.

From overlooked prospect to champion

Mendoza’s journey has been anything but straightforward. Ranked 2,149th in his high school class, he received just one major college offer before eventually making his mark.

After transferring to Indiana Hoosiers football, he led the team to a perfect 16-0 season and a historic national title, capping it with a game-winning touchdown in his hometown.

His rise from obscurity to college football’s top player made him one of the most compelling stories in American sport.

More than a typical quarterback

Known for his personality and intelligence, Mendoza has embraced being different. A self-described “football nerd”, he balances his love for the game with academic success, completing a business degree in just three years.

He has spoken openly about his Cuban heritage and is as comfortable discussing philosophy as he is breaking down plays.

Learning from the greats

Mendoza grew up idolising Tom Brady and has followed his approach to training and preparation. Brady, now a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, has already praised Mendoza’s leadership qualities.

With a similar playing style and mentality, Mendoza is expected to develop under experienced quarterbacks as he begins his NFL career.

Family at the heart of success

Despite the spotlight, Mendoza chose to celebrate his draft moment at home in Miami with his family rather than on stage.

It was a fitting decision for a player whose journey has always been about more than football — a story of resilience, belief and the powerful influence of a mother who never let him give up.
