Brisbane, Australia : Teenage sprint prodigy Gout Gout continued his remarkable rise on the national stage by winning the men’s under-20 100-metre final at the 2026 Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Brisbane on Saturday. Clocking 10.21 seconds with a legal +0.5 m/s tailwind, Gout secured his second consecutive national U20 100m title, yet narrowly missed both the elusive sub-10-second barrier and Australia’s senior national record of 9.93 seconds, set by Patrick Johnson in 2003.
Despite a less than perfect start, the 18-year-old surged down the straight to finish clear of his rivals, crossing the line well ahead of Zavier Peacock (10.35) in second and Uwezo Lubenda (10.37) in third. Gout had earlier topped the heats with a 10.19 run and advanced through the semifinals in 10.44, even as a headwind tested the field.
Gout’s victory at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre also clinched qualification for the World Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon later in the year – a key target he has prioritised over competing at the Commonwealth Games.
This latest performance follows a historic showing at the 2026 Australian Athletics Championships, where Gout became the first Australian man to legally break the 20-second mark in the 200 metres. He clocked an astonishing 19.67 seconds, a time that eclipsed the standing world under-20 mark and surpassed what sprint legend Usain Bolt achieved at the same age.
Earlier in the season, Gout also recorded a legal 10.00-second 100m at a meet in Brisbane and has posted a wind-assisted 9.99, underlining his potential to join Australia’s elite sub-10 club alongside athletes such as Lachlan Kennedy (9.96).
After his win, Gout reflected on his performance, acknowledging the slow start but emphasising his intent to thrill spectators and continue pushing his limits. With his eyes set firmly on international competition and record-breaking goals, the young sprinter’s season remains one to watch.
