Spectators have been told to stay away from Riverside Ground after the venue was damaged by Storm Dave overnight.
The incident forced a delay to the third day of the County Championship Division Two match between Durham County Cricket Club and Kent County Cricket Club.
Safety concerns
Durham confirmed that structural damage had occurred inside the stadium and urged fans not to attend the ground while assessments continue.
In a statement, the club said discussions were ongoing with match officials and venue staff following the impact of the storm on the pitch and other structures at the ground.
Officials added that the safety of players, staff and spectators remained the top priority as they determine when play can safely resume.
Storm disruption
Storm Dave caused significant disruption across northern parts of the UK, affecting both road and rail transport and prompting several flood warnings.
Weather alerts for strong winds covering parts of Scotland, north-west Wales and northern England were lifted on Sunday morning as conditions began to improve.
Match situation
Before the delay, Durham were well placed in the match. The home side are set to resume their second innings on 83-2, holding a 221-run lead over Kent.
Durham, who became a first-class county in 1992, were relegated from Division One of the County Championship last season.
