FC Thun are on the verge of completing one of European football’s most remarkable underdog stories as they move closer to their first ever Swiss Super League title.

The newly promoted side are 15 points clear with seven matches remaining, putting them in position to secure a historic championship.

From crisis to contenders

The club’s turnaround has been dramatic since Andres Gerber became president in 2020. During that period, Thun narrowly avoided financial collapse before earning promotion back to the top flight.

Now the small-town club from the lakeside city of Thun are dominating the league despite competition from traditional giants such as FC Basel and BSC Young Boys.

Gerber compared the achievement to Leicester City’s shock Premier League triumph in 2016.

Lustrinelli’s high-energy system

Much of the success has been credited to head coach Mauro Lustrinelli. The former Switzerland striker has built a fast-paced and aggressive team that presses high and attacks quickly.

Despite averaging less possession than many rivals, Thun lead the league in goals scored and have the best defensive record. In February, they also set a new league mark with 10 consecutive wins.

Squad spirit key to success

Unlike many title challengers, Thun have not spent heavily. Their squad is valued at around £13.8m, far below clubs like Basel and Young Boys.

Players such as Elmin Rastoder, Christopher Ibayi and academy graduate Franz‑Ethan Meichtry have stepped up with crucial goals, while experienced figures including Leonardo Bertone and Kastriot Imeri provide leadership.

Captain Marco Bürki says the team’s unity and mentality have been decisive.

Historic achievement looming

If they finish the job, Thun would become only the second Swiss club to win the second division and the top flight in consecutive seasons since Grasshopper Club Zürich in 1952.

It would rank among football’s greatest underdog triumphs, alongside the title wins of 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1998 and Leicester City in 2016.
