Ahead of the official announcement, BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty has revealed his own predicted squad, highlighting both established stars and a few surprise inclusions as England prepare for their opening clash against Croatia national football team.
England recently wrapped up their pre-tournament “Send-Off Series” with a defeat against Japan national football team, giving Tuchel a final opportunity to evaluate his wider pool of players before trimming his provisional group. The manager had earlier called up 35 players for friendlies against Japan and Uruguay national football team, but must now reduce that list to 26.
Core of the squad
McNulty believes several key names are already guaranteed places. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is expected to remain England’s first-choice stopper, supported by Dean Henderson and rising talent James Trafford.
Defensively, players such as John Stones, Marc Guehi, and Ezri Konsa are expected to form the backbone of the back line, provided Stones can overcome fitness concerns.
In midfield, the trio of Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and emerging talents like Morgan Rogers could play a key role in driving England’s attacking play.
Attack led by Kane
England’s attack is still expected to revolve around captain Harry Kane, the nation’s all-time leading scorer. Wingers Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford are also likely selections, while players such as Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon could offer additional attacking options.
However, Tuchel faces a major dilemma regarding Kane’s backup. With traditional strikers struggling to impress in recent friendlies, McNulty has suggested experienced forward Danny Welbeck as a potential surprise pick.
