DRAMA IN ACCRA: Ghana Sack Coach Otto Addo Just 72 Days Before World Cup Kick-off

Accra :  In a stunning blow to Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sacked head coach Otto Addo, just 72 days before the tournament begins in North America. The decision comes amid a run of poor form in pre-tournament friendlies that has raised alarm bells within the national setup.

End of the Line After Disappointing Results

Addo’s second stint as Black Stars coach ended hours after Ghana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart — a loss sealed by a late goal from Deniz Undav — and followed a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna. These results marked four consecutive defeats in warm-up matches, a sequence that played a major role in the GFA’s decision.

In a statement, the GFA confirmed it had “parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team … effective immediately.” No replacement has yet been officially named.

Addo’s Tenure: Highs and Lows

Otto Addo, a former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and Ghana international, was appointed head coach in March 2024 for his second spell in charge. He successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup — marking the nation’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest stage — but his overall record was mixed, with eight wins and nine losses in 22 games during this period.

Despite a talented squad featuring the likes of Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus, Ghana’s recent performances have failed to inspire confidence. Addo also oversaw a failed qualification campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, adding to the pressure on his position.

Looking Ahead: Urgent Search for Successor

With the World Cup set to begin on June 11, Ghana now faces a race against time to find a new coach capable of steadying the ship. The Black Stars are drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, and their opening match against Panama is scheduled for mid-June.

The GFA’s dramatic decision so close to the tournament underscores the high stakes and expectations surrounding Ghana’s campaign, and raises fresh questions about leadership and direction just weeks before the global spectacle begins.
