Peres Jepchirchir Suspended After EPO Test Finding

Kenyan distance-running star Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) following an adverse analytical finding for erythropoietin (EPO), a prohibited substance associated with enhanced endurance performance. The sample was collected in Kenya before her victory at the Sydney Marathon in August 2026.

The development has sent shockwaves through athletics, given Jepchirchir’s achievements on the international stage. The 33-year-old won Olympic marathon gold at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021, and claimed the women’s world marathon title in 2025. She is also a four-time World Marathon Major winner.

Sydney Marathon Victory Now Under Spotlight

Jepchirchir won the Sydney Marathon on August 30, 2026, clocking 2:18:31 to finish ahead of compatriot Irine Cheptai, who recorded 2:22:11. Ethiopia’s Shure Demise finished third in 2:22:33.

The test finding relates to a sample collected before that race, rather than a test conducted after her Sydney victory. EPO can stimulate red blood cell production, increasing the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity and potentially improving endurance performance. However, an adverse analytical finding does not, by itself, establish all the circumstances or determine the final outcome of an anti-doping case.

Peres Jepchirchir Case: What Happens Next?

The AIU’s provisional suspension means Jepchirchir is temporarily barred from competing while the case proceeds. The suspension is not a final determination of guilt, and the case must be handled under the applicable anti-doping rules.

Her representative, Gianni Demadonna, expressed regret over the situation. Reuters reported him saying: “I can only say that I feel terrible about what happened.” He also stated that athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs should be disqualified. This was the representative’s reaction, not an admission by Jepchirchir.

Peres Jepchirchir’s Career Faces Uncertainty

Jepchirchir has won major marathons in New York in 2021, Boston in 2022 and London in 2024, in addition to Sydney in 2026. Her Olympic gold and world title have made her one of Kenya’s most decorated marathon runners.

The EPO finding now places her career under scrutiny as the anti-doping process continues. The eventual outcome will depend on the proceedings and any further evidence considered by the relevant authorities.
