Fresh from one of the biggest wins of his career at the All England Open Badminton Championships, India’s Lakshya Sen had another difficult hurdle awaiting him in the second round — Hong Kong’s experienced campaigner Ng Ka Long Angus.

Sen had entered the round with confidence after defeating world No.1 Shi Yuqi in a thrilling first-round clash 23-21, 19-21, 21-17, a victory that boosted his momentum in the prestigious Super 1000 tournament. But the next opponent presented a very different type of challenge.

A Rival Who Has Had the Upper Hand

Before the match, Ng Ka Long held a 3-0 head-to-head record over the Indian shuttler. The two had not met since May 2023, but those previous encounters highlighted how the Hong Kong player’s tactical approach had repeatedly troubled Sen.

Deception and Control — Angus’ Biggest Weapons

At 31 years old, Ng Ka Long is known for a deceptive style of play. His ability to disguise shots and control rallies often forces opponents into uncomfortable positions on court.

Indian coach Vimal Kumar acknowledged the challenge before the match, saying:

“Angus is not easy at all, though Lakshya would’ve recovered from a day’s rest.”

The Hong Kong shuttler is particularly dangerous in tight moments. He tends to increase his pace and intensity in crucial sets, using clever movement and quick changes of speed to crowd opponents and seize control of rallies.

A Fighter Who Never Goes Away

Ng Ka Long has a reputation for grinding out long rallies and staying competitive against top players. He has pushed Indian stars such as HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth in the past, making him a tough opponent to shake off despite his ranking slipping to around World No.29.

Although both players had experienced inconsistent results in recent months, Sen’s victory over the reigning world champion in the opening round gave him the confidence to believe he could overcome the tricky Hong Kong challenger.

In a tournament known for producing high-quality battles, the clash between Sen’s aggressive attacking game and Ng Ka Long’s deceptive, patient style promised to be a fascinating tactical duel on the Birmingham courts.
