Why Maguire staying would benefit United

If a new deal is agreed, many supporters of Manchester United may feel it makes sense for Harry Maguire to remain at Old Trafford.

After an injury-hit spell earlier this season, the 32-year-old returned under interim boss Darren Fletcher and then started during Michael Carrick’s early run in charge. Despite limited training, Maguire stepped straight back into the intensity of top-level competition — a sign of both resilience and commitment.

Leadership and experience matter
Maguire’s value extends beyond performances. With experienced figures such as Casemiro expected to depart, United risk losing vital dressing-room authority. Maguire’s communication, organisational skills and willingness to demand standards from team-mates are seen internally as major assets.

His partnership with Lisandro Martinez has also produced encouraging results. Although opportunities together have been limited by injuries and tactical shifts under previous managers, the pair have won 11 of their past 14 starts in a two-man central defence — a promising statistic for United’s Champions League ambitions.

Contract compromise likely
While nothing is finalised, sources suggest optimism around an agreement. Any extension may require compromise on salary and possibly length, particularly with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe focused on reducing costs.

There is also the personal factor. Maguire is settled in the north-west and has indicated previously that leaving a club of United’s stature would not be taken lightly.

With Matthijs de Ligt sidelined and defensive stability crucial, keeping Maguire for at least another season could provide continuity at a time when the squad is in transition.

For fans seeking reliability amid change, that stability alone could make an extension worthwhile.
