Manchester City Edge Newcastle United 2–1 on Saturday to Stay in Title Hunt

Manchester: Manchester City maintained relentless pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal with a hard-earned 2–1 victory over Newcastle United in their Matchweek 27 encounter held on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium.

With Arsenal having dropped points against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the week, City knew a win would significantly tighten the title race — and Pep Guardiola’s men delivered when it mattered.

The hosts made a flying start, taking the lead in the 14th minute through Nico O’Reilly. Set up neatly by Omar Marmoush, the young midfielder unleashed a powerful first-time strike that gave goalkeeper Nick Pope little chance.

Newcastle, however, refused to sit back. Lewis Hall restored parity in the 22nd minute when his effort took a deflection and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma, silencing the home crowd momentarily.

City responded swiftly. Just five minutes after conceding, Erling Haaland whipped in an inviting cross from the right flank, and O’Reilly rose highest at the far post to head home his second of the evening, restoring City’s advantage before halftime.

The second half saw Newcastle push for an equaliser. Dan Burn had the ball in the net earlier but from an offside position, while Pope kept his side in the contest with sharp saves to deny Haaland and Phil Foden late on.
Despite a tense finish and a spirited late surge from the visitors, City’s defence held firm to secure three crucial points on Saturday.

The result moves Manchester City within two points of Arsenal at the top of the table, intensifying the title battle, while Newcastle remain in mid-table as the season enters its decisive phase.
