Ranchi: SG Pipers produced a strong second-half performance to come from behind and defeat JSW Soorma Hockey Club 3–1 in a Women’s Hockey India League encounter on Thursday, strengthening their position at the top of the table.
JSW Soorma began on the front foot and took an early lead through Penny Squibb, who converted a penalty corner in the opening quarter. However, the advantage did not last long as SG Pipers gradually took control of the contest.
Spanish midfielder Lola Riera drew level in the 13th minute, giving the Pipers momentum, before Jyoti Singh put them ahead just five minutes later with a well-taken field goal. The comeback left Soorma chasing the game for long periods.
Despite some attacking intent from JSW Soorma, SG Pipers remained disciplined at the back and sealed the result late in the match when Sunelita Toppo struck in the 58th minute to make it 3–1.
According to The Indian Express, the win helped SG Pipers consolidate their position at the top of the standings, while JSW Soorma’s struggles continued as they remained winless in the tournament.
The result underlined SG Pipers’ growing confidence and depth as the league moves into a decisive phase.
