Barcelona will head into the new year sitting four points clear at the top of the La Liga table after grinding out a crucial 2-0 away win over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica on Sunday, while Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid also picked up important victories to remain firmly in the title race.
At a traditionally difficult venue, Barça had to endure a stern test despite Villarreal being reduced to 10 men. The breakthrough came when Raphinha won and calmly converted a first-half penalty, giving the visitors a vital lead against the run of play. Villarreal had earlier caused problems with their aggressive pressing, forcing several errors at the back, but Joan García produced a series of crucial saves to keep Barcelona level before the opener.
The game shifted decisively when Villarreal defender Renato Veiga was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Lamine Yamal. Even then, Barcelona found clear chances hard to come by until substitutes Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford injected urgency. The move paid off as Frenkie de Jong teed up Yamal, who finished clinically to seal the points. The victory ensured Barcelona closed 2025 with momentum and a healthy cushion at the summit.
Bellingham, Mbappé Fire Real Madrid Past Sevilla in Comfortable Bernabéu Win
Earlier at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid strengthened their position near the top with a 2-0 win over Sevilla. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring shortly before half-time with a well-taken header, asserting Madrid’s control. Sevilla’s task became tougher after Marcao was sent off for a second booking, and Madrid made their numerical advantage count late on when Kylian Mbappé converted an 86th-minute penalty. The goal also saw Mbappé equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year, underlining his impact in white.
Koke Leads the Way as Atlético Madrid Cruise Past Girona to Go Third
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid climbed to third place with a comfortable 3-0 victory away at Girona. Captain Koke set the tone with a stunning long-range strike, before Conor Gallagher’s deflected effort doubled the lead. Antoine Griezmann wrapped up the result late on as Diego Simeone’s side recorded a fourth consecutive win in all competitions, moving to within six points of leaders Barcelona.
With Barcelona setting the pace, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid ensuring no room for error, the La Liga title race heads into the winter break finely poised — and very much alive.
