Jessica Stenson Smashes Australian Women’s Marathon Record in Valencia

A Historic Run in Spain

Australian marathon star Jessica Stenson has rewritten the national record books, delivering a brilliant run at the Valencia Marathon to break the Australian women’s marathon record.

Stenson crossed the line in 2:21:25, shaving nine seconds off Sinead Diver’s previous mark of 2:21:34.

Emotional Moment With Record-Holder Sinead Diver

The 38-year-old, who finished fifth overall, was visibly emotional post-race, sharing that Diver — a close friend and mentor — was the first person to call her.

“I just got off the phone to Sinead… we just cried,” Stenson said. “She was so happy for me. It was so nice to connect after the race.”

Stenson paid tribute to Diver throughout the day, even thinking of her during the final kilometre as she pushed toward the record.

A Career-Best Performance on a Fast Course

On one of the world’s quickest marathon circuits, Stenson delivered the race of her life, smashing her personal best by more than 90 seconds. Despite nerves heading in, the triple Olympian said the pain she expected never arrived.

“Everyone says Valencia is magic… I was really nervous because I knew I was going to have a crack at the record. But I found my flow.”

Her strong finish sealed an already superb year — her third marathon in 2024.

International Podium Led by Kenya

Up ahead, Joyciline Jepkosgei won the women’s race in a world-leading 2:14:00 — the fourth-fastest time ever by a woman — with fellow Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir finishing second.

Kenya also claimed the men’s title, with John Korir running 2:02:24 to beat his personal best by 20 seconds.
Australia’s Thomas Do Canto was the first Aussie home in 2:11:14 (40th place).

What’s Next?

Stenson’s performance cements her position as a major contender heading into the next Olympic cycle, further enhancing a career already marked by resilience, longevity and national pride.
