Shockwaves followed across the continent Tuesday, with Chelsea’s commanding win, Manchester City’s setback, Juventus’s last-gasp escape and Barcelona’s painful lesson defining a night that will be talked about for weeks.
Chelsea 3–0 Barcelona
Estevao announces superstardom as Chelsea dominate 10-man Barca
Chelsea produced their biggest Champions League result since lifting the trophy in 2021, dismantling LaLiga champions Barcelona 3-0 with an electric performance built on speed and tactical precision.
The Blues tore apart Hansi Flick’s high defensive line with relentless runs in behind from Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho and teenage sensation Estevao, who scored a breathtaking solo goal in the 55th minute — slaloming past defenders before smashing into the top corner. The Brazilian became just the third teenager in UCL history to score in each of his first three starts, following Mbappé and Haaland.
Jules Kounde’s disastrous own goal opened the scoring on 27 minutes, and Barcelona’s night worsened when Ronald Araújo saw red for a second booking before half-time. Still, Barca continued their reckless high line, and Chelsea pounced again when Liam Delap tapped in a third after another breakaway.
Chelsea also became the first team to stop Barcelona scoring in 53 matches.
Manager Enzo Maresca praised the maturity of his young squad but refused to get carried away: “A good win, but no more than that… It’s a huge night for Estevao and all the club.”
The Blues now sit fourth in the league phase and face Premier League leaders Arsenal next.
Manchester City 0–2 Bayer Leverkusen
Guardiola’s rotation gamble backfires
Pep Guardiola made 10 changes — and paid the price. A flat and disjointed Manchester City were beaten at home by Bayer Leverkusen, with Álex Grimaldo and Patrik Schick scoring decisive goals.
Leverkusen struck on a swift counter in the 23rd minute, and after Guardiola introduced starters at half-time, Schick stunned the Etihad with a glancing header on 54 minutes.
City have now lost consecutive matches for the first time in months, and two of their last four home UCL fixtures — as many defeats as in their previous 37.
Guardiola admitted his mistake: “Maybe 10 changes is too much. Seeing the result — maybe it’s too much.”
City may now need a result away to Real Madrid in two weeks to secure a top-eight finish.
Marseille 2–1 Newcastle United
Aubameyang double overturns early Barnes strike
Newcastle led through Harvey Barnes in the sixth minute, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned the match upside down with two goals inside five frantic minutes early in the second half.
The former Arsenal forward rounded Nick Pope for the equaliser just 21 seconds after the restart and then stabbed home a poacher’s finish to complete the comeback.
Manager Eddie Howe lamented a costly lapse:
“The 15 minutes at the start of the second half cost us… We didn’t react well enough.”
Newcastle, eighth in the league phase, travel to Everton next needing points and resilience.
Bodo/Glimt 2–3 Juventus
Jonathan David strikes at 90+1 in dramatic finale
Chaos reigned in Norway as Juventus clinched a wild 3-2 victory with a stoppage-time winner from Jonathan David.
After goals from Openda and McKennie overturned Bodo/Glimt’s opener, the hosts equalised via a Sondre Fet penalty in the 87th minute. But David reacted quickest to a rebound to seal victory and lift Juve to 21st in the league phase.
Juventus produced 16 shots on target, equalling the UCL record for an away team, and registered 3.48 xG in an attacking revival.
