LIV Golf to Shift to 72-Hole Tournaments in 2026: What It Means for Players and the League

LIV Golf, the controversial but rapidly growing golf league, is making a major change to its tournament structure starting in 2026. Traditionally, LIV Golf events were played over 54 holes—a format that was shorter than the standard 72 holes used in most professional golf tournaments. This unique approach helped the league differentiate itself but also caused challenges in gaining recognition from the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

Now, LIV Golf has announced that all its events will adopt the 72-hole format, aligning more closely with established tours such as the PGA Tour and European Tour. Here’s what this shift means:

Why LIV Golf Is Making the Change

The primary goal of this move is to enhance credibility and competitiveness. Because LIV Golf tournaments were previously shorter, players did not earn official world ranking points, limiting opportunities to qualify for major championships like the Masters or the Open.

By moving to 72 holes Players now compete in a format familiar to the global golf community, LIV Golf strengthens its case for OWGR recognition and Fans get more rounds of competitive golf, making events more engaging.

Jon Rahm, LIV Golf’s reigning Individual Champion and captain of Legion XIII, described the change as “a win for both players and fans,” emphasizing that a 72-hole structure provides a better test of skill and consistency.

How the 2026 Season Will Look

The 2026 LIV Golf season will start from February in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with tournaments running Thursday through Sunday, mirroring the schedule of traditional tours. The league will maintain its signature shotgun start—where all players begin simultaneously on different holes—as well as the combination of individual and team competitions, which have been hallmarks of the LIV format.

This blend of traditional and unique elements aims to keep the league distinctive while appealing to serious golfers seeking world ranking points.

Expanded Opportunities for Players

LIV Golf is also expanding the pathways for new players to join the league. In addition to the standard qualifying process:

A new LIV Golf Promotions event will be held in January 2026 at Black Diamond Ranch, Florida.

The top two finishers in this event will earn full-season spots.

Two additional players not already exempt from the 2025 International Series rankings will also secure spots.

This means more international players and emerging talent will have the chance to compete on a global stage, creating a more diverse and competitive field.

Implications for the League and Golf Community

This change is not just about tournament length; it represents a strategic move for LIV Golf to gain legitimacy. By adopting the standard format:

Players may finally earn world ranking points, opening doors to majors.

Sponsors and broadcasters may view the league as more credible.

LIV Golf positions itself to potentially collaborate with or be integrated into existing tours in the future.

For fans, the shift promises longer, more competitive tournaments, making each event a true test of consistency, stamina, and strategy.

Conclusion

The 2026 LIV Golf season will mark a turning point. By embracing the traditional 72-hole format while keeping its signature innovations, LIV Golf is attempting to balance legitimacy with the excitement and uniqueness that drew players and audiences in the first place. As the season kicks off in Riyadh, the golfing world will be watching closely to see how this transition impacts competition, player opportunities, and the league’s global standing.
