Manchester United secured a thrilling 4-2 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford on Matchday 9 of the Premier League 2025/26 season, thanks to a brace from Bryan Mbeumo. The win marked Manchester United’s third consecutive Premier League triumph, their first since February 2024. The result propelled them to fourth place in the league standings for the time being.
Apart from Mbeumo’s brace, Matheus Cunha and Casemiro also contributed with goals for United in the match.
Brazilian magic in the first half
Former Wolves forward Cunha ended his 16-match goal drought by scoring his first goal for Manchester United. He curled a low shot into the bottom corner after receiving a short pass from Casemiro on the edge of the area. The second United goal came from former Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro himself, whose shot was deflected off Yasin Ayari and into the opposite corner, leaving Bart Verbruggen completely wrong-footed.
Mbeumo shines amidst Brighton fightback
Mbeumo extended United’s lead to 3-0 after an hour of play, scoring his fifth goal of the season. Benjamin Sesko provided the assist. However, Brighton fought back with former Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck scoring a brilliant free-kick in the 75th minute. The Seagulls then saw Charalampos Kostoulas flick home a near-post header two minutes into stoppage time to make it 3-2.
Just when things got nervous, it was Mbeumo, who sealed the win for United with another goal in added time. Bruno Fernandes’ excellent dummy saw Mbeumo blast the ball into the net with his left foot.
Chelsea go down against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge
Sunderland climbed to second place in the Premier League table after a dramatic late winner by Chemsdine Talbi against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Matchday 9. The match was on course for a draw until Talbi scored from the edge of the box after a quick counter-attack. This is Sunderland’s second away win this season and it takes them two points behind leaders Arsenal.
A look at the match story
Chelsea took an early lead with former Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho scoring his first goal for the club. However, Sunderland equalized through Wilson Isidor, who scored from close range after Chelsea failed to clear a long throw. Despite being less adventurous in the second half, Sunderland managed to exploit the space left by Chelsea’s over-committing players in search of a winner.
Sunderland’s strategy paid off when substitute Brian Brobbery chased a long ball, held up possession, and assisted Talbi for the winner. The victory was particularly impressive as Chelsea had been on a winning streak against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Here’s the points table
Manchester United have risen to 4th in the standings after 9 matches. Ruben Amorim’s men own 16 points. They own 5 wins in addition to posting 1 draw and three defeats.
Chelsea are 8th with 14 points from 9 games. This was their 3rd defeat of the season.
