All You Need To Know: India At World Weightlifting Championships 2025

Bhubaneshwar – India is preparing to compete at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Norway with a 14-member squad, seven men and seven women. The team will be led by Olympic medalist and former World Champion, Mirabai Chanu.

This event promises to showcase top talent, and key details about the Indian squad, schedule, and viewing options are outlined below.

India’s Squad and Key Athletes

The complete Indian contingent comprises 14 lifters, including several notable names:

  • Women’s Squad: Mirabai Chanu (48kg), Koyel Bar (53kg), Bindyarani Devi (58kg), Nirupama Devi (63kg), Harjinder Kaur (69kg), Vanshita Verma (86kg), and Mehak Sharma (86kg+).
  • Men’s Squad: Rishikanta Singh (60kg), Muthupandi Raja (65kg), Ajith Narayana (71kg), Ajaya Babu Valluri (79kg), Abhishek Nipane (88kg), Dilbag Singh (94kg), and Lovepreet Singh (110kg+).

The Spotlight on Mirabai Chanu

Mirabai Chanu, aged 31, is considered India’s strongest medal hopeful. She is an Olympic medalist, a former World Champion (winning gold in the 48kg category in Anaheim in 2017), and a two-time World Championships medalist (winning silver in the 49kg category in Bogota in 2022). She recently secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships after the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Recent Form of the Lifters

Several members of the squad demonstrated strong recent form at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships:

  • Silver medalists: Bindyarani Devi, Nirupama Devi, and Mehak Sharma.
  • Bronze medalists: Harjinder Kaur, Vanshita Verma, and the leading men’s lifter, Lovepreet Singh.

The championships will feature a series of finals from October 2nd to October 11th.

Live Streaming and Telecast

In India, fans can watch the event via live streaming on Olympics.com. There will be no live telecast of the championships on television in the country.
