Vikram Umesh and Para Badminton

What defines strength? Often, society measures it through physical ability. For para-athletes, however, strength can mean overcoming the barriers created by circumstances, limited resources and social perceptions.

Vikram Umesh knows that journey closely.

Born in Pupri in Bihar, Vikram was affected by polio in his left leg when he was two years old. Despite the mobility challenge, he developed a strong interest in sport from a young age. His journey eventually took him from school-level athletics to para high jump and, later, international Para Badminton.

Vikram Umesh鈥檚 Early Sporting Journey

Vikram developed an interest in sports while he was still in school. One of his early breakthroughs came when he won a high jump competition in the fifth standard.

He later competed in a high jump selection trial and secured first position in the trials. That experience helped him recognise his potential as an athlete.

His sporting journey eventually took him into para high jump, where he won a national gold medal at the 2010 National Paralympic Games.

Vikram Umesh and Para Sports

Vikram’s path was not free of difficulties. Access to proper equipment and training was a major challenge during the early years of his sporting career.

Vikram Umesh鈥檚 Struggle With Resources

Vikram has recalled that equipment and training were expensive, making it difficult for him to continue developing as an athlete.

Despite those challenges, he continued participating in competitions and gradually moved towards international sport.

In 2017, he represented India at the Para Badminton World Championships in South Korea and won a bronze medal in men’s doubles. The result became an important turning point in his career.

From High Jump to Para Badminton

An injury in 2011 changed the direction of Vikram’s sporting career.

While recovering, he began playing badminton. Initially, the sport was unfamiliar and technically demanding, but he continued watching other players, learning the basics and practising whenever possible.

A year later, he competed at his first national-level para-badminton competition. His international journey followed, with the 2013 Para Badminton World Championships in Germany becoming an early milestone.

Vikram Umesh and Tata Sports

A major turning point came when Vikram moved to Jamshedpur and began receiving support from Tata Sports.

Vikram Umesh and Tata Steel

In 2017, Vikram moved to Jamshedpur and received support for training and accommodation. In 2018, he joined the Tata Group as an employee in a sports-related role.

Tata Steel’s support has included access to sports infrastructure as well as strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, sports psychology, diet and nutrition support.

The support helped him combine his professional responsibilities with the demands of international sport.

Tata Sports and Para Badminton

Vikram has credited the Tata Sports ecosystem with playing an important role in his development.

The high-performance setup allowed his training to be adapted according to his physical requirements, including strength, weight and muscle management.

For a para-athlete, such individualised support can be an important part of preparing for international competition.

Vikram Umesh Becomes World No. 1

Years of competition and consistent performances eventually took Vikram to the top of the world rankings.

World No. 1 in Para Badminton

In September 2025, Vikram Umesh Kumar was officially ranked World No. 1 in men’s singles para badminton in the BWF rankings.

His rise to the top came after a strong 2025 season that included medals at international events in Egypt, Spain, Dubai, Bahrain, Thailand, Britain and Peru.

The achievement represented a major milestone in his career and followed years of international competition.

He won bronze in men’s doubles at the 2017 Para Badminton World Championships in South Korea and repeated the achievement at the 2019 World Championships in Basel, Switzerland.

Vikram Umesh and Injury

Injuries have also been part of Vikram’s journey.

Vikram Umesh鈥檚 Ankle Injury

During the COVID-19 period, Vikram suffered an ankle injury involving cartilage damage and a torn ligament. He underwent surgery and had to manage another difficult period in his career.

The setback did not end his competitive journey. He returned to international badminton and continued working towards higher levels of performance.

Returning Stronger in Para Badminton

For Vikram, injuries have reinforced the importance of adapting training to the requirements of his body.

His high-performance support system has helped him work on strength, conditioning and recovery while continuing his international career.

Vikram Umesh鈥檚 Game Strategy

Success at the international level requires more than physical preparation.

Vikram Umesh鈥檚 Mental Preparation

Before a match, Vikram studies his opponent and analyses strengths, weaknesses and playing patterns.

He also uses visualisation as part of his preparation, mentally going through situations that may arise during the match.

During competition, he focuses on maintaining composure even after losing points.

Para Badminton and Mental Strength

Para badminton requires athletes to adapt their technique and strategy according to their physical abilities and the characteristics of their opponents.

For Vikram, staying calm and concentrating on his own game are central parts of his approach.

His journey demonstrates that mental preparation can be just as important as physical training at the highest level.

Vikram Umesh鈥檚 Inspiration

Vikram draws inspiration from athletes who have made a significant impact on badminton.

Among para-badminton players, Vikram has identified Malaysian star Cheah Liek Hou as an inspiration.

He has also spoken about Saina Nehwal and her contribution to Indian badminton, particularly her role in helping raise the profile of the sport in India.
