A few years ago, whenever I told my friends in Delhi that I had played competitive cricket for Patna district, I would notice a familiar smile. Not admiration. Amusement.

The assumption was simple: Bihar and cricket were not supposed to belong in the same sentence.

For decades, that had been Bihar’s sporting reality. A state of more than 130 million people. A state that has produced scholars, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs and political leaders. A state whose people have helped build economies across India and around the world. Yet, when it came to sports, Bihar was largely invisible.

Today, that is changing. Remarkably, the face of that change is a teenager from Samastipur.

In a cricket-obsessed nation that has produced legends from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Ranchi, a new name has emerged from an unlikely corner of the country.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, from Tajpur in Bihar’s Samastipur district, has rapidly become one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the game.

His rise began at an unusually young age. In January 2024, at only 12, he made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar against Mumbai. Later that year, he made his India Under-19 debut against Australia Under-19 and scored a century off 58 balls.

The Indian Premier League then provided another major platform.

Rajasthan Royals signed Sooryavanshi for ₹1.1 crore ahead of IPL 2025, making him the youngest player to secure an IPL contract. He made his IPL debut against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19, 2025.

Nine days later, he announced himself with a record-breaking century against Gujarat Titans, reaching three figures from just 35 balls.

He finished IPL 2025 with 252 runs in seven matches at a strike rate above 200.

The next major chapter in the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi cricket story came at the 2026 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

In the final against England, Sooryavanshi produced a spectacular 175 from 80 balls, including 15 fours and 15 sixes.

His innings was the highest individual score in an Under-19 World Cup final and helped India defeat England by 100 runs. India posted 411/9 before bowling England out for 311.

His 175 also became the highest individual score by an Indian in Under-19 World Cup history. He finished the tournament with 30 sixes, breaking the previous record for most sixes in a single edition.

For Bihar cricket, the significance was larger than one innings.

A teenager from Samastipur had delivered on one of the biggest stages in age-group cricket.

IPL 2026 took the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi cricket story to another level.

Representing Rajasthan Royals, he scored 776 runs in 16 matches at an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30. He also hit 72 sixes during the season, the highest tally by a player in a single IPL edition.

He registered a 103 off 37 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad and also produced scores of 97 off 29 against the same opposition, 96 off 47 against Gujarat Titans and 93 off 38 against Lucknow Super Giants.

The numbers were extraordinary, but they do not completely capture the way he approached batting.

At just 15, Sooryavanshi repeatedly attacked experienced bowlers with remarkable intent. His ability to score quickly from the beginning of an innings made him one of the most difficult young batters to contain.

His IPL 2026 campaign also made him the highest run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals that season.

The next challenge is to ensure that the next generation receives similar opportunities.
