LONDON, England — The Premier League transfer window closed with a bang on Monday, as Liverpool sealed a British record deal for striker Alexander Isak. In a blockbuster move that capped a day of frantic activity, the English champions signed the Swedish international from Newcastle for a staggering £125 million.
Isak, who reportedly agreed to a six-year contract, is now the most expensive player in British football history. His fee surpasses the previous record of £107 million, which Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
The Transfer Saga and Its Domino Effect
Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak had been a prolonged affair. A previous £110 million bid was rejected by Newcastle in August, but the player’s determination to force the move proved decisive. Isak had even trained alone during part of the pre-season to push for the transfer. The move was made possible after Newcastle secured the signing of German striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record fee of up to £69 million.
Newcastle wasted no time in reinvesting the Isak windfall, immediately signing DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford for an initial £50 million. Wissa’s arrival provides fresh firepower for the club’s upcoming Champions League campaign.
A Flurry of Last-Minute Moves
The Isak deal was just one of many major transfers on deadline day.
- Manchester City reportedly agreed a fee of around €35 million for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, with long-serving City keeper Ederson set to join Fenerbahce.
- Manchester United addressed their own goalkeeping issues by signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for an initial £18 million. The club also saw several key departures, with Jadon Sancho moving to Aston Villa on loan, Antony joining Real Betis, and Rasmus Hojlund moving to Napoli on loan.
- Aston Villa had a busy day as well, securing the loan move for Sancho and a free transfer for former United defender Victor Lindelof.
- Chelsea sent striker Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich on a loan deal with an obligation to buy for €65 million, while Tottenham agreed a loan move for PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani.
- Arsenal took Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen.
