NORTHAMPTON, England — The England women’s national rugby team, known as the Red Roses, delivered a historic performance on Saturday, defeating Samoa 92-3 in their second Pool A match of the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup. The dominant display, which saw them run in 14 tries, set a new record for the most points ever scored by an England team in a Rugby World Cup match.

Record-Breaking Dominance

The victory at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton was a decisive showcase of England’s offensive power, securing their place in the tournament’s quarterfinals. The win came despite wet conditions and a much-changed lineup, with head coach John Mitchell making 13 changes to the side that beat the USA in the opener.

Individual Brilliance

Winger Jess Breach was a standout player, scoring a hat-trick to bring her career try total to 52. Flyhalf Helena Rowland had a monumental day, not only scoring a try but also converting 11, giving her a personal haul of 27 points—a new individual scoring record for an English player in a World Cup match.

A Stepping Stone to the Knockouts

Samoa, a side with amateur status, showed moments of heart and resilience. The highlight for the Samoan side came early in the second half when flyhalf Harmony Vatau slotted a penalty, earning her nation’s first points of the tournament and sparking wild celebrations on the field. England’s record-breaking win is their 29th successive test victory and a strong statement as they prepare for their final pool match against Australia next week.
