Javokhir Sindarov Leads FYERS American Gambits
Javokhir Sindarov has emerged as one of the key performers of the 2026 Global Chess League, helping FYERS American Gambits reclaim the top position in the standings with two important victories.
The Uzbek Grandmaster first defeated Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand before producing another decisive performance against Alireza Firouzja the following day. His victory over Firouzja proved particularly important as the American Gambits secured a narrow win over Triveni Continental Kings, with the other boards ending in draws.
The results underline Sindarov’s growing influence in the league, where he has progressed from the Prodigy board to the prestigious Icon board during his four seasons in the competition.
Javokhir Sindarov Defeats Viswanathan Anand
Sindarov’s first major win came against five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand on the Icon board.
The game went deep into a tense battle before Anand suffered a time-scramble blunder. Sindarov took advantage of the mistake to secure the victory, giving FYERS American Gambits an important result in their campaign.
The victory was significant beyond the individual result because Sindarov is preparing for his biggest career challenge later this year: a World Championship match against reigning champion D Gukesh.
Despite defeating one of the greatestâ…ž players in chess history, Sindarov remained focused on the team competition and quickly produced another crucial performance.
Javokhir Sindarov Beats Alireza Firouzja
A day after his win over Anand, Javokhir Sindarov faced another elite opponent in Alireza Firouzja of Triveni Continental Kings.
This time, there was no late blunder needed. Sindarov produced a controlled and convincing victory on the Icon board, while the remaining games between the two teams ended in draws. His sole win therefore decided the match in favour of FYERS American Gambits.
The result moved the American Gambits back to the top of the league table and highlighted Sindarov’s ability to deliver when his team needed a decisive result.
FYERS American Gambits Return to the Top
The American Gambits have been among the leading teams throughout the 2026 Global Chess League, although their position has changed repeatedly during the closely contested opening phase.
After five days of competition, FYERS American Gambits were level with Alpine APL Pipers on 12 match points, while Ganges Grandmasters were also on 12. Alpine had played one fewer match at that stage.
The top two teams at the end of the league stage will qualify for the final, making every match increasingly important as the competition enters its decisive phase.
Javokhir Sindarov Builds Momentum Before World Championship
Sindarov’s GCL performances also provide an interesting build-up to his upcoming World Championship challenge against Gukesh.
The 20-year-old Uzbek became the 2026 Candidates Tournament winner and earned the right to challenge the reigning world champion. His current run in Bengaluru has now added victories over Anand and Firouzja to an already impressive year.
With the Global Chess League still underway, Sindarov will now look to maintain his form while helping FYERS American Gambits secure a place in the final.
