Argentina completed a flawless FIFA World Cup group-stage campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jordan, as Lionel Messi came off the bench to score and create yet another piece of tournament history in Dallas.

Already assured of top spot in Group J before kick-off, Argentina rested several key players but still proved too strong for Jordan, who bowed out of the competition after finishing bottom of the group.

Lo Celso and Martinez put Argentina in control

A much-changed Argentina side dominated possession from the outset and took the lead in the 19th minute through Giovani Lo Celso. The midfielder curled a superb free-kick into the top corner to give the defending champions the perfect start.

The advantage doubled just after the half-hour mark following a VAR review. Referee awarded a penalty after Marcos Senesi was accidentally kicked in the head while attempting a header inside the box, and Lautaro Martinez confidently converted from the spot to make it 2-0.

Argentina controlled the remainder of the first half with Jordan struggling to create meaningful opportunities.

Jordan fight back before Messi steals the show

Jordan produced an encouraging response after the break and reduced the deficit in the 55th minute with an excellent team move. Ehsan Haddad delivered a precise cross across goal, allowing Mousa Al Tamari to finish from close range after starting the attack himself.

Five minutes later, the loudest roar of the evening greeted Lionel Messi as he replaced Giovani Lo Celso for the final half hour.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner quickly made his mark. In the 80th minute, Messi curled a brilliant low free-kick around the defensive wall and into the corner to restore Argentina’s two-goal cushion.

The strike was his sixth goal of the tournament, extending his lead in the Golden Boot race while becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive FIFA World Cup matches. It also took his World Cup tally to a record 19 goals.

Argentina set for Cape Verde challenge

The victory ensured Argentina finished Group J with a perfect record of three wins from three matches.

The reigning world champions will now face tournament debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 32 after the African nation secured a historic qualification from the group stage.

Jordan’s spirited effort was not enough to keep their World Cup hopes alive, as they exited the tournament despite a much-improved second-half performance against one of the favourites.
