England batter Joe Root reached the 14,000-run milestone in Test cricket on Saturday and is now within touching distance of Sachin Tendulkar‘s all-time record. The achievement further strengthens Root’s status as one of the finest Test batters of his generation.
With England playing an extensive Test schedule and Root maintaining remarkable consistency, the possibility of him overtaking Tendulkar’s tally appears increasingly realistic.
Why Tendulkar’s Legacy Extends Beyond Records
While Root’s numbers continue to grow, comparisons with Tendulkar inevitably move beyond statistics. The Indian legend excelled across formats and eras, facing some of the greatest bowlers the game has produced, including Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.
Tendulkar amassed 18,426 ODI runs in addition to his Test achievements and remained a dominant force throughout his 24-year international career. His ability to perform across conditions, formats and generations of bowlers remains a key factor in discussions about cricket’s greatest batters.
Different Eras, Different Challenges
Root has largely focused on Test cricket in recent years and has produced exceptional results. However, critics argue that modern cricket’s schedule and bowling standards differ significantly from those encountered by Tendulkar during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Tendulkar carried the expectations of a cricket-obsessed nation while often batting in an Indian side that lacked the depth and consistency of later generations. Many of his defining innings came under immense pressure against elite attacks around the world.
Where Root Stands Among The Greats
There is little doubt that Root belongs among England’s all-time greats. His consistency, adaptability and longevity have made him one of the most successful Test batters in history.
However, many observers believe the debate about the greatest batters of all time involves more than run tallies. Players such as Don Bradman, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli are often judged not only by their records but also by their influence, match-winning ability and impact on the sport.
Record Within Reach
Root still requires nearly 2,000 runs to surpass Tendulkar’s Test aggregate and needs 12 more centuries to move past the Indian’s record of 51 Test hundreds. Whether he reaches those milestones or not, his place among cricket’s modern greats is already secure.
Yet for many fans, overtaking Tendulkar’s numbers would not automatically place him above the Indian icon. Records can be broken, but legacy is built through context, influence and the manner in which those achievements are earned.
