The 20-year-old winger delivered a fearless performance on his World Cup debut, helping Scotland secure their first victory at football's biggest tournament in 36 years.

Scotland’s long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup brought a historic result, but it was young winger Ben Doak who emerged as the standout performer in the tense 1-0 victory over Haiti.

Playing in Scotland’s first men’s World Cup match since 1998, the 20-year-old Bournemouth winger produced an energetic display that captured the imagination of the travelling Tartan Army in Boston.

While experienced stars such as Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Lawrence Shankland started the crucial opener, it was Doak’s pace, direct running and determination that stole the spotlight.

Fearless on the Biggest Stage

Doak played with confidence throughout the match, constantly driving at defenders and providing Scotland’s main attacking threat. His relentless energy was evident in every challenge, including one moment midway through the second half when he celebrated winning a goal kick with the same passion usually reserved for scoring goals.

The winger’s influence was clear whenever Scotland looked dangerous. A powerful run down the right flank helped create one of the team’s best chances before McTominay struck the post. Later, Doak’s attacking play led to the move that eventually resulted in McGinn scoring Scotland’s first World Cup goal since 1998.

His display highlighted why Scotland supporters were disappointed when injury forced him off during the decisive qualifier against Denmark last November.

Overcoming Injury Setbacks

The World Cup appearance marked a significant milestone in Doak’s career after a difficult period dominated by injuries. The youngster missed Euro 2024 after suffering another serious setback and has endured multiple major injuries over the past three years.

Having joined Liverpool from Celtic at the age of 16, Doak faced challenges adapting to life away from home while recovering from injuries.

The winger has previously spoken about how his faith helped him navigate those difficult moments, allowing him to remain focused and positive during long periods on the sidelines.

A New Generation for Scotland

For much of the match, Doak was Scotland’s youngest-ever World Cup player until 19-year-old Findlay Curtis came off the bench late in the game.

Their emergence represents a new generation of Scottish talent unburdened by decades of World Cup disappointment. Unlike many supporters who lived through years of failed qualification campaigns, these young players approach the stage with confidence and freedom.

Former Scotland internationals were quick to praise Doak’s contribution, with ex-winger Pat Nevin describing his performance as outstanding, while former captain Scott Brown hailed him as the type of player every Scotland fan wants to see in the national team.

With Scotland securing a vital victory and keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive, Doak’s performance offered supporters even greater reason for optimism.

At just 20 years old, he has already shown he belongs on football’s biggest stage.
